The sport

What is chessboxing?

The hardest game.

Chessboxing is a hybrid sport that alternates rounds of boxing with rounds of speed chess. You play a round of chess, box a round, then go back to the board, and it repeats until someone wins by checkmate or knockout.

It asks two very different things of you at the same time. You need the composure to think clearly when you are exhausted, and the fitness to keep fighting while you think. Not many sports ask for both.

Boxing rounds. Blitz chess. Every week.

How it works

A bout is a series of alternating rounds. Chess, then boxing, then chess again.

The chess is played fast, on a board beside the ring, against a clock. The boxing happens in the ring under standard rules.

You can win in either one. A checkmate on the board or a stoppage in the ring ends the bout, and so does running down the chess clock or being unable to continue in the boxing.

The hard part is the switch between them. You come off a boxing round with your heart pounding and have to calculate several moves ahead straight away. Almost nothing else asks for that. Staying sharp when your body has nothing left is what the sport comes down to.

The home of Australian chessboxing

Chessboxing has been contested internationally for around twenty years. It has real rules, sanctioned bouts, rankings and titles, and a serious scene behind it.

Chessboxing Australia is the home of all of it here. Whoever you are, and whatever you have done before, there is something here for you.

Weekly sessions you can walk into with no experience in either sport, contact training for people who want to spar properly, juniors, team sessions, and ranked competition for the people who want to fight. Take any of it, in any order.

We run fight nights worth watching whether you ever step in or not. We write and maintain the standards for the sport in this country, and we run it like the real sport it is.

You don't need to box, and you don't need to play chess

The sessions are built for people who have done neither, which is most people. There is no contact. Boxing on the pads, blitz chess in between, no experience needed.

Come on your own if you want. You won't stay a stranger for long.

Structured training, a ranking and the Fight Team are all there for anyone who wants them.

What's on

Chessboxing Australia launches with a free public event. The date and the venue are still to be confirmed. Open to watch, open to try.
